Bendigo is to play host to the National Table Olive Competition as part of next year's Olive and Food Fiesta.

oliveOrganisers applauded the move, and said the decision came following a meeting of key players dedicated to demonstrating a commitment to competition.

"People don't realise how important the olive industry is to the Australian and local economy, and how it is expanded over recent years," said Greg Noonan, from the Rotary Club of Bendigo South.  "With more than half of the Australian output of olives coming from Victoria, it is a significant contributor to the economy," he said.

City of Greater Bendigo Director of City Futures Stan Liacos said the decision would have strong economic benefits.  "We are increasingly becoming aware of just how significant the olive industry is in our broader region, and getting behind events such as this helps in consolidating and exploiting a growing competitive advantage that we have in this area." he said. branch

Australian Olive Association president Paul Miller said promoting the olive industry in Victoria was significant.  "To this end we wish to work with the Association, and in particular the Victorian branch to develop an event which will achieve this goal.  "In fact we would like to promote the quality, not only of Victorian, but Australian olives to the public."

Mr Noonan said that economically, the more local products sold would result in a growing industry and job creation.
